For anyone wanting to reduce refined table salt while boosting trace minerals, Gomasio is a traditional Japanese macrobiotic condiment that brings extraordinary savory depth to vegetables, grains, and salads.
Health Highlights: Unhulled sesame seeds are rich in bioavailable calcium, copper, zinc, and healthy lignans. Dulse seaweed supplies organic iodine, iron, and trace minerals for thyroid and blood purification.
Ingredients
- 1 cup unhulled organic brown sesame seeds
- ½ bag organic dulse seaweed flakes
- 4 tablespoons unrefined coarse sea salt (or pink Himalayan salt)
Directions
- Heat a dry stainless steel or cast-iron skillet over medium-low heat.
- Add sesame seeds (and coarse salt if moist). Toast constantly stirring for 4–5 minutes until seeds become aromatic, lightly golden, and easily crush between thumb and forefinger.
- Remove from heat and let cool for 5 minutes.
- Transfer toasted sesame seeds, salt, and dulse seaweed flakes into a suribachi (Japanese mortar) or food processor. Pulse gently so seeds are cracked open but not ground into paste.
- Store in a glass spice shaker or airtight jar in the refrigerator. Sprinkle generously over salads, roasted vegetables, rice, and soups!
